Captaining Australian team was quite easy before 2015 as many legends like Ricky Ponting and Michael Clarke made it look easy job with fantastic team and squad but since their retirement Australian team has been lacking the leadership. Although Steve Smith and Tim Paine had captained them but their leadership skills weren’t at the best of Aussies’ caliber.
Steve Smith was the regular skipper for Aussies after Michael Clarke’s retirement but in his leadership Aussies only could manage to win in Australia and somehow outside but his team was thrashed by almost every team outside Australia which doesn’t justify his leadership as well. With all that after the ban of Steve Smith, Tim Paine was awarded the leadership but couldn’t justify his leadership as well as his place in the team either. However he is still leading the team but he may face removal very soon. So here are the options Australia can use for future.
1: David Warner
You may question his recent performances in Test cricket, especially in Ashes but he has been phenomenal overall with his performance in all formats, however he can also be considered as an ODIs skipper as he has got the leadership skills that we saw in IPL in few seasons while he also has been seen in some other teams as a skipper. So can be very handy if Australia try him.
2: Pat Cummins
However Australia don’t believe in bowlers’ leadership skills but he is only bowler who is regular for Australia in all forms of cricket while he also levelled the ratings of great Glenn McGrath in 2nd Ashes and is the only bowler who isn’t under scanner of losing the job.
3: Steve Smith
Australia may go back to Steve Smith as believed, however we understand that he has got the best performance as a batsman but his leadership wasn’t quite upto his standard but still is the third option for us to pick as Australia haven’t got many options behind which is the only reason behind picking him.
